I Read Words Other People Write

UF, UF, UF. PNR, HR, Sci-Fi, finding a bit more YA that I enjoy. Mystery, crime, detective shit. Have recently figured out I'm not really a contemporary romance gal. I like smut but am not really into erotica. Oh, did I mention UF?

Sharp Objects - Gillian Flynn whoa. big whoa. This book was tough, relentless, dirty and deep. I absolutely love reading about a female lead with problems, deep and dark problems that aren't overcome just because she finds a man. Reading others reviews I see there are lots of crime/mystery authors that I need to read. There are a lot of comparisons to male authors, not necessarily flattering reviews, but I do think that female crime/mystery authors often have to blow people out of the water to even compare to their favorite male authors. I usually read Paranormal Romance and Urban Fantasy but I think I'll be adding lots of crime/mystery/thriller books to my To Read list! This is probably not a story that everyone will love or appreciate. It'll leave a dirty taste in your mouth, maybe your brain. Gillian Flynn doesn't shy away from the dank, dirty and hopeless that just won't sit well with a lot of readers, I'm sure. I particularly liked it because of those things. Maybe I've been reading too many books with sweet, wrapped-up-with-a-ribbon endings. It's not the kind of story I want to read every day but it's such a shoulder shaking kinda book! I highly recommend this to someone looking for something tough and rough, something completely different from some of your everyday sweet/sexy reads.
